NPS Announces Maritime Heritage Preservation Grants

The National Park Service Has Collaborated with the Maritime Administration to Provide this $2 Million Investment

These National Maritime Heritage Program grants are only possible due to the collaboration of these two government entities.

The National Park Service (NPS) and the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD) have collaborated to award grants towards education programs and projects that will preserve United States maritime history. $2 million spread over 12 projects has been allocated, with projects spanning nine states.

"These grants are made possible by cross-agency, collaborative efforts dedicated to conserving our nation's shared maritime treasures," said NPS Director Chuck Sams. "Preservation and education programs allow us to celebrate our nation's vast maritime history and teach maritime skills so future generations can create new experiences and stories for years to come."

This grant program is unusual in that it is not actually funded by tax dollars, but instead the money comes from recycled vessels that MARAD removed from its National Defense Reserve Fleet. The grants will be directed to individual state historic preservation offices that will then allocate funds as they see fit to programs and projects.
