The extra gas tax charged in New Jersey will be split amongst all the counties in the state, which will use it to improve infrastructure including roads and bridges.

The Transportation Trust Fund, which is supported by the increase in gas tax signed into law by former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, will fund the County Aid Program to help maintain local roads, bridges and other infrastructure improvements.

As reported by ForConstructionPros.com, 21 counties in the state will each get a share of $161 million for those projects.

"When people ask, where does the money from the gas tax go, this is the answer: The majority of these funds go to local government to improve their roads and bridges without burdening local property taxpayers," transportation commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, says.

Counties only have until Dec. 1 of this year to submit eligible projects to the New Jersey state Department of Transportation for approval.
