The New York Senate is currently hearing S 1854 - which doesn't mandate new licenses or create a new licensing system - but rather, updates which roles are exempt.

 

S 1854 is "an act to amend the education law, in relation to certain licensing exemptions for Landscape Architects."

Further, this legislation was written to address licensing requirement discrepancies for junior/assistant Landscape Architects. In 1971, chapter 987 of the education law was written exempting these groups who act under the supervision of a licensed Landscape Architect yet, New York State mandates licensing for these junior and assistant professionals while New York City does not. This bill removes this inconsistency.

Sponsored by Senator Monica Martinez (D), the bill is currently in the Senate Rules Committee. On Jan. 14 it was referred to the Senate Higher Education Committee, where it was first reported on April 30 to Senate, read again on May 1, and advanced to its third reading on May 5. It was sent to the current committee on June 13.
