ASHEVILLE, N.C. ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe A new method of attacking the woolly adelgid, which is known to destroys hemlock trees, is being tested. The technique, involving the dairy product whey and a fungus, is showing promise but may be a long way from making an impact. Scott Costa, a University of Vermont researcher, is exploring a method that lets the insect-killing fungus grow in the field rather than in a laboratory, cutting down on prohibitive costs. The fungus and sweet whey, a cheese-making byproduct, are sprayed on trees to kill the adelgid, an exotic pest wiping out native trees from North Carolina to Massachusetts. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s in extremely early development right now, it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s not anything beyond some limited trials that have occurred,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Rusty Rhea, an entomologist with the U.S. Forest Service. Left untreated, hemlocks die in four to five years. For now, the most effective treatment method is soil injection or saturation of a systemic insecticide in the spring or fall, Rhea said. About 74,000 acres of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s 500,000 acres contain hemlocks, and ?EUR??,,????'?????<?pretty much every place we have hemlocks, we have adelgids,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said park spokesman Bob Miller. The park uses a crew of up to 16 people in peak season who spray about 2,000 acres of trees with a soapy solution and inject the insecticide, a program that will cost $812,000 this year. Predator beetles are employed in more remote areas. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?None of those things work perfectly, and they all have their limitations, so we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll be watching this with a lot of eagerness,?EUR??,,????'?????<?
