Scott Costa, a University of Vermont researcher, is exploring a method that lets the insect-killing fungus grow in the field rather than in a laboratory, cutting down on prohibitive costs. The fungus and sweet whey, a cheese-making byproduct, are sprayed on trees to kill the adelgid, an exotic pest wiping out native trees from North Carolina to Massachusetts.
