As part of a new city ordinance to keep the landscape of Lynchburg, Va. beautiful, developers must plant two trees every 40 feet along new city streets.

Officials in Lynchburg, Va. in late February finalized what they hope will be stronger landscaping laws for city development.

The newly approved draft says new laws will help control pollution, protect property values and ?EUR??,,????'??ensure that the city remains an attractive place to live, visit and work.?EUR??,,????'??

The current code requires five percent of a commercial development?EUR??,,????'???s parking lot be landscaped. Most other localities, including Bedford and Amherst counties, require between 15 and 20 percent.

Don Floyd, a local landscape contractor, said Lynchburg?EUR??,,????'???s proposed ordinance is less rigid than some other communities, such as Roanoke and Amherst.

Some highlights of the new 13-page ordinance include:

?EUR??,,????'???? Rules that say residential developers must plant two trees every 40 feet along new city streets. If shade trees can?EUR??,,????'???t be used, two ornamental trees for every 30 feet can be a substitute.

?EUR??,,????'???? Parking lots with less than 200 spaces will have one shade tree for every eight parking spaces. One shrub must be planted for every parking space.

?EUR??,,????'???? For lots with more than 200 spaces, the same provisions apply. The developer must also build median strips that include 20 percent of the total landscaping.

?EUR??,,????'???? The draft has an exception for vehicle businesses that allows landscaping to be planted so it doesn?EUR??,,????'???t interfere with displays.

?EUR??,,????'???? In areas zoned for business, industry or high-density residential use, trees must cover 10 percent of the entire site. In lower-density residential areas, it can range from 15 to 20 percent of the entire site.
