April saw positive employment changes in the majority of U.S. states, with 36 states witnessing an increase in nonfarm payroll employment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a nationwide gain of 253,000 jobs, following a rise of 165,000 jobs in March.

California demonstrated strong employment growth, leading the way with an addition of 67,000 jobs, followed by Texas (+33,300) and Florida (+21,200). However, 14 states and the District of Columbia experienced a collective loss of 39,000 jobs during the same period. In terms of percentage changes, Indiana's employment rose by 0.5%, while Rhode Island reported a decline of 0.8% between March and April.

 

Over the past year, the U.S. labor market has made significant progress in recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The employment numbers show that 4.0 million jobs have been added, signifying a complete recovery. With the exception of Rhode Island, all states and the District of Columbia have seen job gains. Texas led with an increase of 534,600 jobs, while West Virginia experienced the smallest increase as they added 1,800 jobs. Nevada exhibited the highest percentage increase at 4.2%.

The NAHB analyzed employment data within the construction sector, which covers both residential and non-residential construction. Out of the 48 states that provided data, 24 states witnessed an increase in construction sector jobs, while the other 24 states reported job losses. Washington topped the list with an addition of 4,300 construction jobs, while Texas experienced a loss of 8,500 jobs. Overall, the construction industry added a net total of 15,000 jobs in April compared to the previous month.

On an annual basis, the construction sector in the U.S. observed an increase of 205,000 jobs, marking a 2.7% growth compared to April 2022. Texas led the way with a gain of 28,000 jobs, while California reported a loss of 5,100 construction sector jobs. Arkansas demonstrated the highest annual growth rate at 9.8%, while West Virginia experienced a decline of 3.7%.
