NALP Launches Construction Safety Course for Landscape Industry
Helping to Prevent Injuries From Fatal Four

New 10-hour courses will be offered in person for OSHA training tailored specifically to the landscape profession. NALP can offer the course through their alliance with the agency.

The National Association of Landscape Professionals announced the introduction of a 10-hour construction safety course for the landscape industry.

This will be the first time the course will be tailored to specifically address safety topics related to landscape employees. The course will provide training on recognition, avoidance and prevention of workplace hazards.

NALP formed an alliance with OSHA in 2004 to focus on promoting safety of landscape employees, including youth and non-English speaking workers. The alliance was renewed in 2013.

According to OSHA, most construction related injuries and fatalities stem from the "Fatal Four". This includes falls, struck by object, electrocutions and being caught in between equipment or objects.

In 2017 the construction industry was most frequently cited for violating OSHA's standards pertaining to fall protection and scaffolding safety.

The course's topics will include workers' rights, employer responsibilities and filing a complaint. OSHA's authorized trainers will lead it, and attendees will receive a certificate upon completion.

The first course will be held at the NALP office in Fairfax, Va., on Feb. 7 and 8. NALP's safety advisor Sam Steel will present it. It will also be offered at Chattahoochee Technical College in Acworth, Ga., Feb. 22 to 23. More course dates will be posted on NALP's website.

Companies can request the course be presented at their location, with up to 30 participants.

Courses are open to everyone in the landscape industry and cost $199 for NALP members and $299 for non-members.
