NAHB Members Spearhead Pro-Housing Legislation to Tackle Affordability Challenges

Home Builders Associations Forge Alliances with Legislators in Massachusetts and New Mexico

NAHB affiliates in Massachusetts and New Mexico collaborate with state leaders to address housing shortages and affordability.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recently reported multiple Home Builders Associations met with state governs to address housing affordability. The Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Massachusetts (HBRAMA) is taking a proactive approach to address the state's housing shortage, which requires the production of 200,000 homes by 2023 to meet growing demand. Governor Maura Healey recently unveiled the Affordable Homes Act, a comprehensive bill representing the largest proposed investment in housing in the state's history. Rob Brennan, Chair of the HBRAMA Government Affairs Committee, highlights the association's role in shaping this legislation. He emphasizes the importance of engaging with the current administration early on, bringing constructive insights to the table.

"A lot of our success was showing up and coming to the table with not just concerns, not just objections, but coming to the table with how to advance housing, particularly workforce housing in the commonwealth at market rate," says Brennan.

In Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association (SFAHBA) is also actively advocating for the residential construction industry. Members recently attended a luncheon with New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham organized by the Western Governors Association. Miles D. Conway, Executive Officer of SFAHBA, emphasizes the governor's responsiveness and commitment to addressing the housing affordability crisis.

"Gov. Lujan Grisham continues to be a responsive partner for our home building industry, using the powers of her office to cut red tape and press for innovative programs that abide with NAHB's key strategies for achieving housing affordability goals," says Conway.
