Michigan State Launches Mentorship Program

Michigan State University's landscape architecture program has officially launched its new mentorship program for students who are members of the MSU Student American Society of Landscape Architects chapter.

The aim of the program is "to foster leadership and professional work ethics for [students]" and it is supported by the Landscape Architecture Alumni and Advisory Board (LAAAB). Members of the LAAAB will be the mentors for the students.

The inaugural year of the program will have a total of seven mentoring groups, each with two lead mentors and about four mentees per group. According to an MSU news post, the long-term plan for the program is to have recently graduated mentees become mentors for current students, thus creating a cyclical system.

Topics that the groups will cover include, but are not limited to:
Taking steps towards becoming a promising professional,
Preparing job application materials,
Developing leadership skills,
Evaluating resumes and portfolios,
Practicing public speaking,
Reviewing do's and don't's when meeting with a client,
Networking, and
Understanding common conflicts of interest in the profession.
