Lumber and Paint Leads Building Material Price Spike

Index Jumped 3.6 Percent

Lumber and paint prices jumped 3.6 percent in January according to a report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The prices of goods climbed 3.6 percent in January according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report that was released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The index showed a 25.4 percent jump in softwood lumber prices, while indoor and outdoor paint saw a 9 percent price increase. Meanwhile, building material prices increased 20.3 percent year over year that also have risen 28.7 percent since January 2020 while the index has climbed 8.4 percent over the last four months.
The price index of services inputs to residential construction increased 2.9 percent in January following a 1.3 percent increase in December 2021. The index further declined 13.5 percent between June and November 2021.
Seasonally adjusted, the PPI for softwood lumber increased 25.4 percent in January following a 21.3 percent increase in December. Since spiking in September 2021, prices have increased 73.9 percent. According to Random Lengths data, the 'mill price' of framing lumber has more than tripled since August.
Paint on the other hand has increased 9 percent in January for both exterior and interior architectural coatings according to the PPI.
