The leaves of this dogwood tree were burned after pesticides were applied to the surrounding area. While pesticides can effectively control pests and save costly plants and turf from damage, they can also cause irreversible damage. Explore alternatives to using pesticides whenever possible.

A long with pesticide use comes a multitude of risks with a limited range of benefits. When they are used properly, pesticides can control pests effectively and protect costly plants and turf from damage. In some cases, pesticides may be the most cost-effective way to manage certain types of pests.

The risks include hazards to people, to the site being treated, and to the environment. Because of these risks, the decision to use pesticides in landscape, turf or interior areas should be well thought out. Always look for alternatives to using chemicals for pest management.

Familiarize yourself with the physical characteristics of the terrain, greenhouse, building or other application site before you begin an application. The label and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) include important information about the hazards the material poses to you, others in the area, animals and the environment. Inspect the treatment area for any conditions or objects that could affect the safety of the application.

Material Safety Data Sheets

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) provides a lot of detailed information about the hazards of a particular pesticide and its physical and chemical aspects. Keep in mind though that an MSDS is not considered to be a part of the pesticide labeling and cannot substitute for a label to meet labeling requirements. The MSDS can duplicate a limited amount of information found in a pesticide label. Information found on an MSDS is not considered to be directions or requirements, but rather a set of guidelines ?EUR??,,????'?????<

Information typically found on an MSDS includes:

Manufacturers of pesticides provide MSDS and make them available to anybody who stores, sells or handles pesticides. MSDS are available for every registered pesticide and can be found online at .www.cdms.net/manuf/manuf.asp

Homeowner Pesticides: For Professionals?

Pesticides sold in home-improvement warehouses are a tempting option for professional landscapers because they are pre-mixed and Ready-To-Use (RTU).
