Designing your paver project does not have to be a difficult process. There are a variety of techniques for keeping the project both simple and creative. Landscape designers who have operated their own business for a number of years have developed a few simple guidelines that will keep things from getting overly complicated.
Remember, you are the designer, the professional. The homeowner is paying you for advice and expertise. It is important to have confidence in your ability to give the homeowner what they are looking for. Homeowners are often unsure as to the final design of the project and this is a primary reason why the homeowner is coming to you. They expect you to discuss options, find their likes and dislikes, and design a project they can enjoy for the long term. Display a positive attitude when presenting your plan as it is important the homeowner sees your confidence in your design.
Designing ?EUR??,,????'?????<?in the square?EUR??,,????'?????<? is a thing of the past. Unless you are forced to go linear, curves give the design life and movement. Some of the best ways to work with curves are as follows:
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? Design and layout to ensure you achieve a majority of full cuts.
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? Use your edge restraint to lay out a curve to match the design.
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? Take a piece of soapstone and line the pavers.
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? Use a hand held chop saw with diamond blade to make a faster, cleaner cut and a water hook up to cut help mitigate any dust.
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? Soldier or sailor the edge, whichever you prefer, to stay in concert with your design.
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? Edge the pavers with either edging strip, concrete toe, or both if you prefer.
There are a variety of methods to add life and movement to your project. Options such as the use of repeating paver patterns, which appear random, as well as uniform and formal use of a single paver shape, i.e. Holland Stone or Plaza Rectangles are available.
When using repeating patterns, make sure that you know the ratios required for your desired pattern. Some manufacturers provide mixed sizes in each pallet, while others provide only one shape per pallet. I have known a number of contractors who were forced to change their design for the final 10 percent of the project, simply due to poor calculations. While the project was acceptable, it did not meet the expectation of the owner. There are a variety of shapes and styles available, in addition to an endless variety of patterns. The patterns and shapes you choose should match the style of the house. Remember, the homeowner is depending on your expertise. Don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t let them down. Be brilliant in your layout and design, as it will pay off when it comes time to show the homeowner the finished product.
Adding life and movement to a paver patio can be a rewarding experience, but remember that most of these design applications will take time. Don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t forget to charge accordingly. You are creating a work of art; you should be compensated for your creativity and design.
Another option is the winding pathway. The primary purpose for a curved or winding pathway is to create movement. It makes little sense to lay the pattern straight and then cut the curve in. This application takes away from the movement, as the straight lines will clash with the curved path in the way your brain processes the two – confusing it, if you will.
The ?EUR??,,????'?????<?cut-in?EUR??,,????'?????<? is a method showing detail and contrast. There are several methods to incorporate a cut-in. For simpler designs, the layout is drawn on the field, with these stones pulled and cut. Inlay is then cut to fit, with each unit installed during the process. This would be similar to making cuts in your soldier course.
More detailed designs use a stencil, marking each paver with the precise cut line, completing the entire inlay in advance, then laying on the existing paver field. The perimeter is then traced on the field, fieldstones cut, then the inlay is placed into the cut area.
Stencils or hand draws are more difficult and time consuming but will give your customer the one-of-a-kind design that they are looking for. There must be an understanding of expectation, as this is very difficult for even experienced landscape construction personnel. Make sure the customer realizes this is hand cut to design and not to overly scrutinize each cut. With a degree of diligence, the overall design will look fantastic.
Recently, the use of prefabricated inlays has become popular. They offer the designer a variety of standard designs, but can provide custom designs at an additional cost. The prefab inlay is hands down the easiest to install, as most of the detailed cuts have already been completed. It delivers complete, often with a setting membrane, which can be placed directly on the bedding sand, limiting cuts to your field pavers. To minimize costs, you may be giving up some creativity for ease of installation.
When any of these applications are implemented, they will provide a wonderful addition to any landscape design. The use of pavers with curves, multiple patterns and inlays provide an attractive, cost effective and maintenance-free way to add living space to your outdoor paradise.
