You?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve likely heard it said that the best maintenance is preventative maintenance. That not only applies to your automobile but also to your landscape equipment. In particular landscape contractors, their crew and maintenance professionals should take a few extra hours each week to maintain the engines of their equipment. In the long run it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll save time and money because they won?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t have to take their equipment to repair shops or purchase expensive engine parts.
Dennis Abbott, owner and partner of Lawnmowers, Etc. in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., has about 80 percent of his clientele as professional landscapers, with the remainder home owners.
Maintenance supervisors, Cal Trans, state parks and school districts bring in their electric drills, electric hammers, cement mixers, line trimmers, leaf blowers, lawn tractors and walk behind mowers for service.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?If nothing is busted, then we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll do an oil change, dispose of the oil, change the air and oil filters, replace the spark plugs and sharpen the blades,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Abbott told LC/DBM. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll also grease the unit if needed. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s like a car that you have to bring in every 3,000 miles for an oil change. Except with these lawn mowers, they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re not rated by miles but by usage. They need to be brought in for periodic tune ups.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Abbott said most landscape professionals wait until their equipment breaks down or can no longer run. There?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a few landscapers who want their equipment to run smoothly and have some backup equipment, so there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s no interruption of their service. The larger landscape firms have more crew members with a fleet of equipment. Being able to rotate the equipment?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s usage can save on wear and tear.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?When someone brings their landscape equipment to us we can take notice of things and recommend some preventative maintenance,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Abbott. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll notice if a cable is being frayed or if there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s wear on the caster wheels. By law we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re not allowed to do the work on the equipment until the customer has approved it.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Lawnmowers, Etc. gives its customers an estimate on the work done and Abbott said he saves the old parts and shows them to the customer.
Even though lawnmowers may operate in conditions varying from dry and dirty to moist and thick, Abbott said it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s not that important to clean the bottom of the lawnmower. He said the mowers have air filters, so they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re built to withstand all the dirt and moisture. However, replacing the engine parts is vital to the equipment?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s effectiveness.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?If they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re not replaced, eventually the piece will decline,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Abbott. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve had customers tell us they lost power on their line trimmer. The solution could be as simple as cleaning the fuel filter. Once that?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s replaced, it runs great.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Another important aspect of lawnmower maintenance is sharpening the blades. Abbott said a landscaper can make a visual scan of the mowed turf to see how well the grass is being cut. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll look more clean if the blade is sharp. Because the blades move so fast on a rotary mower, however, they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll still cut grass with dull blades.
If the mower runs over some rocks or pebbles, the mower may need to have its blades sharpened and balanced. Once a blade on an edger becomes dull, it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s time to replace it rather than sharpen it, said Abbott. To maintain a line trimmer, the air and fuel filters need to be regularly replaced and they need to run at the right ratio of oil and gas. Mufflers and exhaust systems also need to be cleaned.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The unleaded fuel in the line trimmers lasts usually about six to eight weeks,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Abbott. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?For those who live in colder climates, you need to fill the tanks with fuel to avoid any rust or corrosion that may occur in the winter.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Abbott has observed that some landscapers make the mistake of running the machine with no air filter, which will shorten the life of the machine, especially in dusty conditions. Sometimes dirt, debris and leaves around the cooling system cause the equipment to run too hot, putting unnecessary strain on the engine. Running a machine too lean with improper lubrication, at a ratio of 75-to-1 or 100-to-1, could cause the engine to seize. He suggested running equipment at a ratio of 50-to-1.
Felix Orozco owns and operates Lawn/Turf Equipment Repair in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., servicing weed whackers, hedge trimmers, lawnmowers and leaf blowers for professionals in the landscape industry. He mainly repairs landscape equipment and does some service to repair filters.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?People mainly bring in their equipment for repairs or because it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s hard to start the engine,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Orozco told LC/DBM.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?One of the biggest mistakes I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve seen is when they wash their lawnmowers, they get water inside the gas tank. This moisture creates water at the bottom of the carburetor. Guys use the choke and pull the chord and it gets stuck. In the future they should maintain the lawnmowers themselves and grease it up. Don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t wash the motor. There?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s no reason to wash it at all.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Orozco said the engine needs to stay lubricated and it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s important to change the air and oil filters. He recommends making regular oil changes. If the air filter is dirty, clean it. Otherwise, replace it. Spark plugs should be replaced periodically, too.
Lawn/Turf Equipment Repair also works on hedge trimmers. Sometimes using less oil will cause the engine to heat up more. Within five minutes of use, the engine could heat up and seize, said Orozco. A fuel stabilizer could come in handy if the equipment is going to be stored more than three weeks. The gear box and shaft need to be lubricated and the air filter cleaned, regularly. A 40-to-1 ratio for gasoline and oil will work well with hedge trimmers.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?I recommend that ratio because oil is used to lubricate the bearings and it helps the engine to run cooler,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Orozco. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?If the engine runs hot, then it puts wear and tear on the rings and bearings. It can burn out a two-cycle engine. The gasoline you get today has so many additives that it breaks down the oil mixture quicker.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Some landscapers don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t have the right ratio for their fuel mixture on their chain saws or blowers. Many of the walk behind mowers use a four-cycle oil. If any dirt gets into the engine, Orozco said, it can be blown away with a high pressure nozzle. About once per week blades should be sharpened for lawnmowers that have heavy usage. Leaf blowers, like many other pieces of landscape equipment, need to have their air and fuel filters replaced, along with the spark plugs.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?One of the biggest problems I see is that people don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t check the oil on their lawnmowers,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Orozco. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?This causes the piston rod, which is made out of aluminum, to heat up and then it becomes busted. If you have a bad crank, it can cost up to $250 to fix it. I usually tell people that at that point it makes more sense to get a new engine, which only costs an additional $50 or $100. Plus, with a new engine, it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s already updated.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Orozco said many lawnmower manufacturers give a two-year warranty on the engines, provided the customer follows closely the maintenance guidelines. So, it pays in the end to take the extra time to properly maintain your landscape equipment, instead of suffering down time to either replace it or repair it.
Typical lawnmower maintenance items include: sharpening the blade; changing the engine oil; cleaning the air filter and replacing the spark plug; cable adjustment is also required on some models. Always refer to the maintenance schedule included in the owner?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s manual for the specific maintenance requirements for each lawnmower.
The blade is a major wear item and requires frequent inspection, periodic sharpening, and eventual replacement to maintain top-notch cutting performance. Replacement blades generally cost around $12 for single blade models and $24 for twin blade models. Labor for a dealer to install will vary based on the area and dealer?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s labor rate. The grass bag also will wear during use and should be cleaned and inspected regularly. (Grass bags generally cost in the range of approximately $30-$40).
1. How do you replace wear items?
The customer should always refer to the owner?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s manual for the specific procedure. Blade replacement and sharpening should usually be done by the dealer, because the blade bolts must be properly tightened using a torque wrench. If the blades are not properly tightened they could break our come out. Replacing the grass bag simply involves removing the fabric from the frame and replacing the with a new fabric bag. This can easily be done by the customer.
2. What happens if you don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t check and replace worn parts? How can that affect the performance and functionality of your lawnmower?
Failing to replace the blade will result poor cut quality (visible brown spots on the lawn from torn/shredded grass), poor bagging or discharge performance, and additional load on the engine. If the wear becomes severe enough, the blade could fail ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe so the blade inspection should be done before each use. A clogged grass bag will restrict air flow, causing poor bagging performance. And a torn or worn bag can allow debris to pass through it, posing a risk to the operator. Frequent grass bag inspection is critical to maintaining maximum bagging performance and safe operation.
3. What are the most common maintenance issues with lawnmowers?
Neglecting to sharpening and replace the blade(s) will result in less than optimal cutting performance. Failing to change the engine oil and check and clean or replace the air filter regularly can result in rapid engine wear, especially if the lawnmower is used in dusty conditions. And forgetting to empty the fuel from the carburetor (or add gasoline stabilizer) prior to long term storage can result in carburetor damage and starting problems when the mower is first used during the spring mowing season.
4. What kind of safety precautions should a mechanic take when working on the lawnmower?
The mechanic should always refer to the shop manual when performing a repair. Important safety information specific to the model being repaired will be clearly listed. Proper safety equipment also should be worn.
5. When should owners turn to their dealers for serious problems and when can they do it themselves? Are there certain situations where hobby mechanics should turn to a professional?
Simple maintenance procedures like inspecting the blade(s), changing the oil, replacing the air filter, spark plug, and grass bag are shown in the owner?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s manual and can usually be performed by the customer. However, other more complex procedures like sharpening/replacing the blades or replacing broken or damaged components are usually best left up to dealers.
6. Are there routine steps an owner should take before and after operating a lawnmower? What considerations should be taken when taking lawnmower out of storage or into storage for the season?
It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s always a good idea to turn the fuel valve off and empty and clean the grass bag after using a lawnmower. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s also a good time to check the engine oil and blade condition, so the lawnmower will be ready to use the next time you want to mow. If the lawnmower is going to be stored for a long period (usually more than 30 days), then the customer should follow the storage procedures shown in the owner?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s manual. The procedure usually involves adding gasoline stabilizer, running the engine for a few minutes outside to ensure all the gasoline in the fuel system is treated, turning the fuel valve off, and running the mower until the engine stalls. In most cases, this procedure will prevent fuel-related problems from occurring when the mower is removed from storage.
