The National Park Service opened a public comment period to discuss future ideas as part of the Petroglyph Point area of the Lava Beds National Monument in California. Comments opened from October 24 through November 24, 2024, as the point is considered one of the most sacred sites to the Modoc people as it features rock imagery on a 267-acre detached unit of the park.

 

The site management plan was designed to improve the protection of the fundamental resources from threats while determining appropriate site access.

Some of the concepts in the preliminary phase include enhancing the protection of cultural and natural resources, reducing conflicting issues, identifying co-stewardship goals, lack of acceptable orientation, information, interpretation, updating management direction, and developing adaptive strategies with new data when available.

Public meetings are held to share information about the plan, comments, and the process of the planning. After comments are made either online or postmarked, there will be additional opportunities for input that may lead to adjust concepts.
