Kernards Township, N.J. is home to many daily commuters into New York City and tragically lost 25 community members in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. In 2004, community leaders and family members of those lost began plans for a place of remembrance to honor those victims. Anthony Sblendorio, an eight-year resident, landscape architect and the principal of Back to Nature Landscape Associates, was eager to make a contribution to his hometown. With this one word, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?embrace,?EUR??,,????'?????<? the team explored different layouts that took into account the purpose of the memorial as well as the needs and constraints of an active park. After months of refinement through meetings and late night, off-hours design work, the team came up with a design plan that included two crescent shaped fieldstone walls set within a large bluestone plaza surrounded by a ring of large shade trees. One of the walls would provide seating for visitors while the other would hold a piece of steel from the World Trade Center site. The effect of this design was to create a quiet and reflective space within a vibrant and active park. The design was met with great acclaim and appreciation although the plan was still to be somewhat revised due to budgetary constraints. These revisions placed more emphasis on shaping a space through plantings rather than hard stone. In an emotional ceremony, the 9/11 memorial was dedicated on Sept, of this year. Since that ceremony, many township residents have visited this space to reflect and share the embrace of remembrance. As part of its strong community commitment, Back to Nature donated all design and half of the construction services for the execution of the September 11 memorial.
