Trends in Modern Hardscapes
Gone are the days of cookie-cutter homes. Today?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s homeowners are bombarded by television programs, publications, websites, and retailers, all eager to showcase ways to personalize your living environment.
As outdoor improvements continue to be on the top of the homeowner wish list, the hardscape industry continues to evolve to meet the ever-changing demands of the modern world.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve seen some definite trend shifts in recent years, some of which has to do with the green movement and some of which has to do with economic factors that trigger homeowners to invest in their properties and spend more time at home,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Ken O?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?Neill, Vice President of Belgard???????(R)???? Hardscapes.
Bigger and Better As sophisticated home design becomes more the rule and less the exception, homeowners are trending towards hardscapes that offer the look of natural stone. Ahead of this trend, Belgard evolved their manufacturing process to provide a number of products that incorporate stone-like appearance and texture with the affordability of manufactured hardscapes.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Many of our pavers and wall products are created by scanning natural stone with a 3-D scanner and using the dimensional imagery to create molds to produce hardscape products that mimic the look and texture of slate, flagstone, or hand-chiseled rock,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Len Browning, LASN Associate Editor and Belgard Hardscape Technical Advisor Len Browning. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?But unlike natural stone, pavers can be laid in a pattern that deceptively looks random but installs much more easily.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
In conjunction with a more natural look, homeowners are also trending towards larger scale pavers. This creates additional considerations in both the manufacturing and installation processes in order to provide quality hardscape surfaces and installations. For residential installations, larger format thinner slab units would be considered for walkways and patio areas; but for residential driveways, 80mm-thick units would be appropriate.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?That?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s why we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve created two different versions of our Lafitt?EUR??,,????'?????????????? pavers,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Browning said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Both incorporate a larger footprint, but our Lafitt Patio Slab offers a thinner profile for a flexible base or overlay foot traffic installation, while our Mega-Lafitt?EUR??,,????'?????????????? is thicker and can withstand residential vehicular loads.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
On roadways that sustain high traffic indexes, the use of larger scale units would require an increased unit thickness.
This increased thickness would be dictated by a maximum 3-to-1 aspect ratio (length divided by the thickness) that the ASCE promotes in their Structural Design of Interlocking Concrete Pavement for Municipal Streets and Roadways publication.
Green is ?EUR??,,????'?????<?In?EUR??,,????'?????<? The green industry continues to become more mainstream, making its way into both the commercial and residential worlds. With PICP (Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement) helping to secure LEED???????(R)???? credits and often increasing usable space by decreasing the need for a retention pond, more developers are turning to PICP for their paving needs. In addition, many municipalities are developing green initiatives, like Chicago?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Green Alley Program,?EUR??,,????'?????<? to encourage homeowners and businesses to utilize Best Management Practices like PICP and rain harvesting systems to reduce pollution and flooding. These permeable pavers install over a gradient bed of gravel, which helps to reduce stormwater runoff volume and pollution levels by allowing water to percolate through the PICP surface and down into the open-graded base. The gravel base temporarily houses the water, reducing the incidence of localized flooding, and then filters out pollutants before slowly returning water to the community aquifer by infiltration or alternative water management.
Over the Edge Although concrete edging is still the standard in paver installation, homeowners are beginning to trend towards other options to create a more decorative look. These options can include edging with a complementary paver or with natural stone, such as mortar-set granite curbing. In addition, the xompany has developed a line of edging stones that are specifically designed for edging applications.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Our Anglia Edger?EUR??,,????'?????????????? is 8?EUR??,,????'?????<? high to install on the same base as the pavers and form a clean, decorative edge,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Browning said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?The edgers emulate hand-hewn stone and are tumbled to look distressed, which creates a modern, manicured look.?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Browning.
