Bad Trees, Trees Prohibited by Code, Part II

Making the List
In Salida, Colorado, landscape and tree regulations (Article VII, Sec. 7-7-20) require the owner of any property to cut and remove female boxelders (Acer negundo). While the ordinance does not specify the reasoning, general undesirable characteristics include brittle, weak wood, short life and susceptibility to boxelder bug and trunk decay. It is clear that prohibited trees will have a very short life in this community.

The Bureau of Invasive Plant Management, Florida Department of Environmental Protection has compiled an extensive list of prohibited species. Miami-Dade County, Florida is one such community that defines ?EUR??,,????'?????<

The El Cerrito, Calif. municipal code (Section 10.90.190, Title 10, Chapter 10.90) prohibits the planting of plants for various reasons including rapid growth, height at maturity, dense foliage, shallow root structure, flammability, breakability or invasiveness. Five tree species are prohibited in El Cerrito. They include coast redwood, Monterey cypress, Monterey pine and blue and red gum eucalyptus.

Rochester Hills, Michigan prohibits the planting of what was once America?EUR??,,????'?????<Acer rubrum) and flowering pear (Pyrus calleryana) as bad trees simply due to popularity and being over planted in the city. Several trees are not allowed along city streets according to the city?EUR??,,????'?????<

The Corvallis, Washington ?EUR??,,????'?????<

Newberry Port, Massachusetts lists 16 prohibited tree species that overrun native species. Some of the banned trees include Norway maple, European alder and Korean mountain ash.

Unlisted Prohibited Trees
Banning trees in community tree ordinances is tantamount to signing a death certificate or allowing wholesale destruction to any tree so listed. Surprisingly, ?EUR??,,????'?????<

Tree ordinances in coastal counties in states from Texas to Virginia do not identify, for instance, which trees are more susceptible to hurricane damage, or which trees are more ?EUR??,,????'?????<

One of the most important reasons why some flora ought to be listed as prohibited, is that some species are ?EUR??,,????'?????<
