Krog District

Atlanta, Georgia
by CORE

Through preservation, sustainable material strategies, and people-centered design, the Krog District demonstrates how adaptive reuse and thoughtful landscape architecture can catalyze economic vitality while strengthening community connection.

The Commercial & Retail Development Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Krog District is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Krog District
The Krog District redefines the public realm along one of Atlanta's most active pedestrian corridors, transforming a collection of underutilized industrial parcels into a cohesive, walkable destination. Spanning nearly 1,000 feet of Atlanta BeltLine frontage, the project positions landscape architecture as the organizing structure that unifies adaptive reuse, new mixed-use development, and retail activation.

Rather than treating landscape as an amenity, the design establishes it as connective infrastructure. A calibrated network of pedestrian paseos, shared streets, and outdoor gathering spaces resolves complex grade changes and previously disjointed circulation patterns. Retail edges are intentionally framed by layered planting, shaded seating zones, and generous pedestrian clearways that encourage dwell time and support commercial vitality.

Material selections draw from the site's industrial heritage, blending preserved brick and steel with contemporary paving, reclaimed wood accents, and integrated lighting that enhances safety and nighttime activation. Sustainable strategies are embedded throughout, including pervious paving systems, structural soils for long-term canopy health, and native, climate-adapted plantings that reduce resource demand while strengthening ecological performance.

By prioritizing connectivity, durability, and human-scaled experience, the Krog District demonstrates how landscape architecture can shape identity and elevate mixed-use redevelopment into a vibrant, enduring urban environment.

Krog District - Pocket Park
Located along nearly 1,000 feet of Atlanta BeltLine frontage in Inman Park and Old Fourth Ward, the Krog District reimagines a fragmented industrial site into a vibrant mixed-use destination. Anchored by the historic Krog Street Market, the redevelopment stitches together previously disconnected parcels through adaptive reuse, two new mixed-use buildings, activated paseos, and enhanced pedestrian access.

At the heart of the project is the Krog District Pocket Park, a sculptural landscape that transforms a former gravel parking lot into a dynamic community anchor. Modified triangular landforms mediate grade changes between the BeltLine and adjacent buildings, creating playful terrain for climbing, seating, and gathering. A canopy of strategically placed trees mitigates heat island effects while framing views and softening the urban edge. Integrated linear LED lighting embedded within the landforms extends usability into the evening, reinforcing the BeltLine as an 18-hour corridor.
