IPEMA Q and A with the Experts

A Conversation with Brad Pittam, President, International Play Equipment Manufacturing Association (IPEMA)
by Staff

Thanks for taking the time with us, Brad. What have you found to be the most important benefit of being a member of the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA)?

I have been an IPEMA member and board member since 2014, most recently becoming the President in 2022. The benefit of membership keeps me coming back each year. Involvement with IPEMA is crucial to the products we, and our members, represent. The IPEMA certification program ensures our product lines are current and meet high standards - all with the purpose of continuing to create safer playground spaces for children and families to enjoy them. Not only this, but there is a consistent, open dialogue between members and IPEMA that results in positive changes for the playground industry.

What kinds of trends are you seeing when it comes to playground design?

We are seeing an increase in popularity with creative, engaging themed playgrounds. These playgrounds deliver important physical and mental stimulation to keep kids engaged and active in a myriad of ways. This trend, I think, will continue into future generations - these playgrounds will create different environments where children can play with their peers and use their imaginations.

What are some ideas for creating a themed playground?

Creative playground themes hold many benefits for children to use their imaginative and creative ideas. For example, you can take an out-of-this-world approach and create an outer space theme. This playground can be educational as well as engaging, with the planets and galaxies inspiring children to learn about outer space and have fun at the same time. There are also fantasy worlds that can be brought to the playground - whether that be a large castle, a pirate ship or a steam locomotive, these areas allow kids to share their creativity right on the playground.

Do you have any thoughts on the issue of how to balance safety and "risky play" at playgrounds?

A key component of an effective playground design is challenging play that allows children to develop muscles, bone density, and coordination skills. Effective playground designs accomplish this while mitigating the risk for serious injury - children feel like they are taking a risk, yet playground equipment designers can create this sensation in a safe environment. Fall risk, for example, is something that we are always mindful of when considering play equipment. The thrill of heights needs to be accompanied by a safe, impact attenuating surface. Always be on the lookout for IPEMA-certified equipment and safety surfacing; IPEMA is committed to ensuring that suppliers and manufacturers meet the play industry's current and applicable ASTM and CSA standards for safety.
