Bonner County’s, Idaho?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s eurasian milfoil task force plans to recommend an integrated approach to knocking back the submerged noxious weed this summer. If implemented, the approach would contrast sharply with last summer’s controversial treatment campaign, which relied exclusively on the use of herbicides to control weed infestations in the Pend Oreille watershed. The integrated approach would likely involve the use of some herbicides, but it could also include the use of diver dredging, bottom barriers, biological controls, and the restoration of native aquatic plants colonies. So far there are no recommendations as to where each of the various methods should be employed. Specific treatment recommendations are slated for an upcoming discussion by the task force. Utilizing a balanced approach was one of a half-dozen or so “patterns of consensus” which emerged during the advisory board’s marathon-length meeting recently. Other zones of agreement included seeking funding for independent pre- and post-treatment mapping of milfoil infestations, launching a public education campaign, and working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to study the use of biocontrols and re-vegetation with native plants.
