A: The Kelvin + eNvy is a hybrid rental and condominium mixed-use development within walking distance of the Metro, the Navy Yard, Nationals Park, the Anacostia River-front, and the River Walk Trail. HCM provided architecture and landscape architecture services. Their Landscape Architects designed rooftop amenity spaces with views into the Nationals Ballpark, the U.S. Capitol, and Alexandria, VA. Amenities include outdoor kitchens, shade structures, TV lounges, firepit lounges, communal dining spaces, and a shared swimming pool. Lower-level courtyards are connected to public amenity spaces, the leasing office, and the building entrance. The streetscape design provides a pedestrian link from the Metro to the entrance of Nationals Ballpark, where the entire block becomes an entertainment venue for gameday activities.

Glasshouse, Pittsburgh, PA

B: Designed on the site of Pittsburgh's historic glassmaking factories, Glasshouse is positioned along the Monongahela River overlooking Pittsburgh's Central Business District. This transit-oriented project is within walking distance of downtown, with light rail and bus stops located adjacent to the site. The project was constructed on a brownfield and met environmental design standards for a building next to the 100-year floodplain. Key concepts encourage residents, visitors and the community to view the water and utilize the Three Rivers Heritage Trail for walking and biking. Ground floor residential units include porches, stoops, and patios to engage the adjacent public spaces and access the trail. The landscape of this former brownfield was transformed into a walkable community. Landscape features include a Public Park space on the west side of the building, the Heritage hiker/biker trail to the north, streetscape with public access to the trail and several amenity courtyards for resident activities. The courtyards feature four activity lawns for exercise and games, two outdoor kitchen/grill areas, a shade trellis with outdoor dining space, a swimming pool and a variety of seating throughout. HCM landscape architects were key consultants in the planning & entitlement for this project, including presentations to City and stakeholders for the trail, public spaces, streetscape and courtyards. In 2022, Glasshouse received the Presidential Award of Excellence from the ASLA Maryland Chapter and a Merit Award from the ASLA Potomac Chapter.

Fernandez Center, Baltimore, MD

C: The Fernandez Center is the newest addition to Loyola University's 80-acre Evergreen Campus and serves as a prominent, lively place for the student body and faculty. The design program includes a flexible plaza, outdoor classroom, expanded streetscape, outdoor gathering spaces, service and loading area, and pedestrian connections between the academic quad, existing campus walkways, and the surrounding community. Slightly below the plaza, an outdoor classroom features a chalkboard, planter walls, seat walls, and a crushed granite walking surface. A specimen red maple (Acer rubrum) punctuates the plaza and serves as a focal point. The project utilizes environmental site design strategies, most notably rainwater treatment and harvesting. The Evergreen Campus, classified as a Level II arboretum, gained more than 50 trees, 440 shrubs, 670 perennials, and 3,500 groundcovers because of this project. In 2023, this project received an Honor Award from the ASLA Maryland Chapter and a Merit Award from the ASLA Potomac Chapter.

Greenbriar Park, Potomac, MD

D: Greenbriar Park is a 25-acre park featuring trails, interpretive play, soccer, basketball and volleyball, a forested stream valley, re-created meadows, and integrated storm water management. HCM Landscape Architects led a multidisciplinary team alongside the Montgomery County Department of Parks (see page 116) from evaluation through construction. At its heart is a custom-designed play area highlighting the "Journey of a Raindrop," interpreting how water moves through the watershed from Appalachian mountain streams to the Chesapeake Bay. Locally sourced materials, including stone from the last operating quarry in Montgomery County, were used in walls, paving, and piers. Since opening in 2016, the park has become a popular community gathering space. In 2018, Greenbriar Park received the Presidential Award of Excellence from the ASLA Maryland Chapter and a Merit Award from the ASLA Potomac Chapter the following year.

Black Hill, Germantown, Maryland

E: Germantown is a diverse and active mixed-use community close to Germantown Town Center, Black Hill Regional Park, and a planned transit station. The 107-acre development includes multifamily residential, senior living, office, retail, and a hotel space totaling 3.2 million square feet. The urban design is organized around a central boulevard green space with interconnected, pedestrian-oriented streets. The landscape architecture design includes a large, central green with walking paths, seating areas, shade pavilions, and a terraced outdoor movie amphitheater, several small pocket parks, a bocce courtyard, a community garden space, the streetscape, and a club house courtyard including a swimming pool, spa, outdoor demonstration kitchen, television area, lounge seating areas, and an exercise lawn.
