The School & Corporate Campus Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

The new Greeley West High School was designed to replace the original building, built in 1965, and 19 portable classrooms that supported it. The new school is 264,000 square feet and provides capacity for 1,800 students.

 

The new site design at Greeley West High school responds directly to the needs of the school's athletic program while creating spaces for socialization, learning, and daily class activities.

As part of the replacement, the entire campus vehicular and pedestrian circulation has been transformed to create a more welcoming and functional entrance. This main entrance creates the basis for a prominent east-west pedestrian promenade that connects the community and student drop-off areas. A diversity of outdoor spaces - such as outdoor classrooms, break-out spaces, plazas, an open lawn, a multi-functional outdoor amphitheater, and sports facilities (including six tennis courts a baseball and softball field) - provide a variety of opportunities for teaching and socializing during and after school hours.

During construction Greeley West High School remained an activity community occupied by students. The project was completed through a phased construction process.
