by Surfacedesign

The School & Corporate Campus Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Pierpoint Lane is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Set against a backdrop of neighborhood expansion and rigid grid planning, Pierpoint Lane is a new urban greenway that cuts through a transit-heavy intersection in San Francisco's Mission Bay. Originally intended as an Emergency Vehicle Access route, the alley-like corridor was reimagined to serve its local users, maximizing its potential as an intuitive and welcoming public space. Combining a public park, major streetscape, and roof-level terrace within a largely private business setting, Pierpoint Lane has been designed to facilitate informal and serendipitous encounters, inviting the community to gather, wander, and discover moments off the beaten path. A lush atmosphere contrasts the busy transit corridor, transforming the district into a more pedestrian-friendly neighborhood where people can find reprieve amid daily movement. Intuitive wayfinding, seasonal planting, and integrated public art support a renewed sense of public life and well-being.

The site's boundaries are deliberately ambiguous, communicating inclusivity and openness to passersby. A refined plant palette of varied texture and scale establishes continuity through the lane, with flowering shrubs and creeping groundcovers creating cohesion while gesturing to what remains of Mission Bay's once-robust natural habitat at nearby Mission Creek Channel-one of the area's last tidal estuaries. Canopy trees provide shade while understory plantings add color, form, and density; columnar trees define key intersections and the 3rd Street frontage. Bioretention planters with seasonally shifting plantings reinforce the site's ecological performance and visual richness.

Acknowledging the site's susceptibility to differential settlement and flooding, Pierpoint Lane is designed for resilience, adapting to tectonic shifts and environmental change. A rich material palette of stone, concrete, and monolithic features weaves throughout, with varied paving types and textures guiding circulation and complementing adjacent uses. Stone formations embedded across the landscape acknowledge underlying seismic movement and shifting fill material, grounding the site in its geological context. Interspersed gathering spaces-including seating nooks, stone outcroppings, and a lawn amphitheater-offer moments of pause for the Mission Bay workforce, residents, and visitors, transforming Pierpoint Lane into a contemplative and vibrant greenway within the evolving urban fabric.
