Hollydale Community Park

South Gate, California
by Keziah Olsen, LASN

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Among several great projects, we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought Hollydale Community Park deserved to be showcased online.

Hollydale Community Park has been reimagined as a vibrant and welcoming public space for the eastern section of the Hollydale neighborhood in South Gate. Nestled between the warehouse corridor's railroad tracks and Industrial Avenue, the two-acre park serves as a much-needed buffer between the residential community and the nearby commercial zone.

The redesign puts safety and community connection at the forefront. A gated perimeter now encloses the park, offering a secure setting without feeling closed off. A walking trail loops through the park, encouraging everyday activity while promoting a sense of openness and flow. The park's new layout fosters inclusivity, activity, and pride.

Active play is a central theme throughout the park. A full basketball court and a modern playground provide space for kids and teens to move, explore, and connect. New picnic areas and shaded benches offer comfort and convenience for families and neighbors spending time outdoors. A generous open lawn supports casual play and relaxation, while an open-air theater with a permanent movie screen backdrop allows the space to transform for community movie nights, performances, and other shared events.

The landscape includes a thoughtful arrangement of shade trees to provide relief from the sun and enhance the overall comfort and beauty of the park. A new gateway marker at the park's main entrance now acts as both a visual anchor and a proud symbol of identity for the neighborhood.

With its mix of recreation, gathering space, and natural elements, the revitalized Hollydale Community Park is a vital asset for the area-bringing people together, offering safe and active experiences, and reinforcing the neighborhood's character and community spirit.
