Holliday Park Playground

Indianapolis, Indiana
by Rundell Ernstberger Associates

Funded entirely through private donations, the playground stands as a model for community-driven design and demonstrates how thoughtful landscape architecture can create meaningful public spaces that foster connection and curiosity.

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Holliday Park Playground is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

The re-imagined Holliday Park Playground transforms an aging play area into a vibrant destination for play, exploration, and community within one of Holliday Park's most beloved landscapes. Nestled among mature tree canopy and overlooking the White River corridor, the new playground celebrates the park's natural character while creating a dynamic environment for visitors of all ages and abilities. Organized around a series of interconnected experiences-including a welcoming entry plaza, central lawn and gathering space, toddler and adventure play zones, and a dramatic ravine playscape integrated into the hillside-the design encourages movement, discovery, and nature-based play. Slides built into the terrain, climbing elements, natural materials, and flexible exploration areas invite children to engage with the landscape while caregivers enjoy clear sightlines and comfortable gathering spaces.

The project was led by Rundell Ernstberger Associates as landscape architect and civil engineer, guiding community engagement, design, and implementation in close collaboration with the Holliday Park Foundation. Extensive engagement-including hands-on workshops with children, neighborhood groups, and community organizations-helped shape the design framework known as the "Pillars of Play," which emphasizes connection to place, adventure, creativity, and inclusive gathering. The project team worked closely with engineers, playground specialists, and fabricators to integrate play structures and site amenities into a cohesive experience that reflects the park's natural setting.
