According to the paper, Evaluation of Recycled Aggregates Test Section Performance, published by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, integrating recycled concrete as aggregate in concrete mixes destined for pavement applications not only saves money and promotes sustainability, it produces acceptable results – 27 years of service before rehabilitation as opposed to 32 years for traditional mixes. The paper also includes specification recommendations and design guidelines for these recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) mixes. https://www.dot.state.mn.us/research/reports/2017/201706.pdf
An ongoing study by the USGS is assessing the effectiveness of various types of permeable pavements – pavers, concrete and asphalt –at reducing the amount of runoff volume and pollutants. The expected results include the quantifying of those amounts, improved design capabilities, and information about maintenance and upkeep of permeable pavements. Graphs showing the last seven days of continuous measurements are available at https://tinyurl.com/y944yr2x.
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute recently published a case study on the largest permeable interlocking concrete pavement project in America, the Southeast Atlanta Green Infrastructure Initiative, which led to the installation of 1.5 million concrete pavers on four miles of streets. The eight-page, full-color document can be purchased at the ICPI online store. Also, the organization is offering its members a new package of safety meeting templates. https://www.icpi.org/shophttps://www.icpi.org/safetymeetingoutlines
Researchers at Princeton University are continuing to evaluate techniques to improve outcomes using concrete made with alkali-activated materials, a Portland cement alternative whose production creates up to 90 percent less carbon emissions, and has been shown to be as strong as Portland cement but does not have proven long-term durability. Their findings so far have offered hope in reduce age-related cracking of concrete made with these greener materials and lower its permeability. https://tinyurl.com/y9u93s2u.
Scott Widmann, a project manager for DPR Construction, states that a very beneficial use of drones on construction projects is for site logistics – "coordinating where and how materials should be delivered and stored, where heavy equipment should be moved, and when and where work should be performed." His company employs drone-captured images to help plot out these logistics as well as track the progress of a project. https://www.expouav.com/news/latest/is-your-uav-data-ready-to-take-flight/.
The American Concrete Institute has teamed up with various digital content distributors to allow the organization's collection of codes, specifications, guides, reports, & technotes to be accessed by interested individuals at one or more site at the same time. The content can also be bundled with information from other standards developing organizations. https://www.concrete.org/publications/multiuseroptions.aspx.
The National Precast Concrete Association reports that recent large-scale construction projects that successfully used precast concrete as a material of choice shows that "its flexibility, durability and ease of installation," benefits those types applications. The projects in question were the replacement of a pier in Plymouth, Mass., that used six 60-foot-by-2-foot-by-3-foot solid precast beams; and a prototype of a modular structure that can be used to retrofit water control systems that used six precast concrete 8-foot-by-8-foot-by-8-foot blocks interconnected with each other. https://tinyurl.com/yae4738y.
