With all the buzz about, and love being given to, permeable and pervious pavement systems these days, LC/DBM decided to check on the health of their non-permeable cousins.

The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute assured that non-permeable pavers are going strong, stating that of the approximate 460 million total square feet of pavers sold in the U.S. in 2014, only about 25 to 30 million square feet were for permeable interlocking concrete pavement systems.

Another healthy sign:

''Concrete paving slabs are seeing much wider use in residential applications as well as in commercial uses and they are almost all placed in non-permeable applications.''
David Smith, Technical Director, ICPI

The standard that ICPI is developing (expecting ASTM approval this year), defines a slab as a unit with a length to thickness ratio greater than 4, a minimum thickness greater than 30 mm and a maximum length and width of 48'' x 48''. icpi.org

  • Life span is at least 40 years (if designed and installed correctly)
  • Can be constructed with slightly widened joints filled with permeable aggregates over open-graded (permeable) aggregate bedding, base and sub-base
  • Can be made with concrete that is stronger and more durable than cast-in-place concrete
  • Can be removed and reinstated for utility or base repairs without destroying and having to replace the concrete
  • Can have a visually calming effect
  • Has limited use in vehicular applications

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has released the newly revised Pervious Concrete Pavement Maintenance and Operations Guide. The eight-page guide explains the role that proper maintenance plays with regard to pervious concrete's effectiveness and its durability, and identifies the owner's responsibilities to provide that maintenance.
