Water conservation issues will continue to be a hot topic in the new millennium. That?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s where landscape contactors can step forward to make a difference by installing and setting up irrigation controllers. In the long run SMART controllers will help save customers money, time and assist in maintaining green, lush landscapes.
LCN interviewed some experts in the irrigation industry to lend advice on what steps a landscape contractor should take in setting up and maintaining these systems.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Adding soil moisture sensors and control modules to existing irrigation controllers on a property being maintained will save water and improve the health of the plant material,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Tom Penning, Irrometer Co. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????This will save their clients money and maintenance costs, thus building loyalty among their customer base. Also, their labor costs will reduce because they will no longer have to seasonally re-program controllers throughout the year since the sensor system makes such adjustments automatically.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
With irrigation controllers, landscape contractors are selling a new piece of equipment to their customers, said Tom Ash, Hydropoint Data Systems. He also suggested they form a more aggressive business model for the landscape industry. This gives them the opportunity to create new and better services for their customers.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Landscape contractors can also check with their local water district to receive a rebate,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Nina Colasurdo, Ewing Irrigation Products. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????All they have to do is step up and fill out the paperwork. If a SMART controller is installed on a residential property it can save $90 in Southern California or $640 per irrigated acre. By taking monthly water readings, a contractor can show the customer how they can save 30 percent on their water bill by using a SMART controller.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
There is no secret or short- cut to profitability when it comes to installing irrigation controllers, said Benjamin Raines, CLIA, DIG Corp. Like any other aspect of landscape construction, (i.e. planting trees, installing sod or laying mainline), profitability will increase when the labor hours are reduced. The simplest way to reduce labor hours is to have skilled, experienced installers delegated to the appropriate job.
As far as sensor equipment is concerned, ease of installation and a simple user interface are of significant importance, said Penning. In order to make the installation quick and cost-effective the installer should be able to accomplish the entire installation in a single trip.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Today there are many different types of controllers specified by landscape architects and irrigation consultants,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Raines. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Most of these have an internal transformer and should be hard-wired to the 110V AC power supply. These are usually pedestal-mounted controllers set in a small concrete pad. Contractors should also be familiar with wall mounted external controllers that require no pad or pedestal. These controllers normally include waterproof enclosures of some kind.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Exterior enclosure/pedestal mount controllers are installed on small concrete pads that are formed on-site, according to Raines. Before pouring, electrical sweeps are installed in the center of the forms for the power supply wires and valve control/sensor wires, which are pulled later. After the pad dries, the enclosure/pedestal is fastened to the pad with bolts or anchors, and then the controller is attached to the enclosure/pedestal.
Wall mount controllers include an enclosure that is set up for wall mounting and most manufacturers provide a mounting template and screws/wall anchors as well. These controllers are installed by drilling appropriate holes in the wall and then fastening the enclosure to the wall with the provided screws.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Most products require a person to insert a schedule with a soak time,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Ash. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????At the highest levels you need to calculate the most efficient irrigation schedule for every given situation. The schedule needs to adapt to changes in the weather.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Controller programming should be done with as many start times as possible and short enough run times to avoid run-off during each cycle, said Penning. The sensor equipment simply eliminates all cycles that are not needed.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????All irrigation controllers mount like any controller,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Ash. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????You hook up the valve wires to the terminal strip. They all set up differently. Manufacturer?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s customer service is handy for asking how-to and also provides training and manuals.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Irrigation Association offers education classes on Smart Irrigation equipment that includes instruction on soil moisture sensor systems and controller installation and scheduling.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Often times the distributor or manufacturer will have hot lines to aid with technical information,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Colasurdo. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Make sure and ask your distributor if they have worked with your specific irrigation controller and have experience with clocks. You can really foul up the system quickly if you don?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t get the right answers.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Ash said if you have an on-site sensor, you won?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t be able to get the help you would if you paid for broadcast weather data. The fee typically runs $4 per month for residences and $18 per month for two-way control capability (i.e. schools, parks or municipalities).
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????With flow sensing, flow control, rain sensing and soil moisture sensors you get big bang for the buck,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Colasurdo. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Landscape contractors can?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t make the adjustments for unseasonably hot or wet days, but a SMART controller can. If it detects a leak or break in the system it will shut it down. This innovation could reach commercial properties quickly.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
On the Internet side if you have a SMART controller you can see every controller, station and weather data, said Ash. At a low cost you can get access and visibility. It helps for the landscape contractor to nurture healthier landscapes. That way the landscape professional comes out as a hero and saves the customer money. With a SMART controller the contractor doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t have to drive to 50 different sites to manage the irrigation.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Green programs are finding the fastest payback in landscape efficiency and savings,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Ash. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Start with SMART controllers. Schools now want to do it. Landscape contractors can be right in the middle of that.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Colasurdo said she foresees simpler more sensor-based controllers in the future and less ET transmitting. Most landscape contractors on site have a fairly good idea how much water the plants need. Just don?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t overwater them. As the cost of copper wire rises, the need for a two-wire system becomes more important. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s much easier to track, as you can have up to 200 valve zones on a system.
Irrigation contractors can save time and labor on large residential or commercial jobs by installing a 2Wire Decoder Module into the controller and converting the system to two-wire operation.
The Hunter ICC, for example, easily accepts the 2Wire Decoder Module, which slips into the module slot. All zones or only selected stations in a hybrid system can be converted to two-wire operation.
With a 2Wire irrigation plan, just a single pair of wires extends from the controller to the 2Wire field decoders, located at the valves. Field decoders are programmed with unique station addresses to activate operation.
This technology has proven a cost-saving alternative on sites with a quarter-acre or more because it requires less copper wire, reduces installation time and labor and facilitates system expandability.
During a system expansion, the installer connects additional wire to the last field decoder in the network and adds as many zones as needed. No trenching back to the controller is required.
An irrigation controller with 32 stations, for example, can be expanded to 48 stations, controlling up to 96 valves if two valves are run at the same time.
The popularity of two-wire has increased dramatically over the last several years because of affordability, simplified learning curve and increased availability of proven products.
Popular sites for two-wire installations include: college campuses, sports fields, park and recreation centers, HOAs, cemeteries, commercial centers and other large landscapes.
