Geosynthetics in Congress

The performance of roads built with geosynthetics was always superior to those built without geosynthetics and geosynthetics are better for the environment as well as drainage around roads.

The geosynthetics industry was highlighted February 7, 2008 when Representative Heath Schuler (D-N.C.), presented his opening statement to the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Subcommittee on Water Resources and the Environment hearing on the Water Resources Development Act of 2008. Schuler said, “As a real estate developer, I am very familiar with the infrastructure requirements for a new development.

One of the greatest tools we deployed was long-lasting geosynthetics under newly paved roads. The performance of roads built with geosynthetics was always superior to those built without geosynthetics and geosynthetics are better for the environment as well as drainage around roads. Buttressing my personal experience with geosynthetics is evidence from the federal government about the benefits associated with utilizing geosynthetic materials.” Schuler went on to highlight studies conducted in the 1980s that tested the performance of geosynthetics in canals, landfills and waste storage facilities. In each case, use of geosynthetics greatly increased the lifespan of the infrastructure, saving taxpayer money and reducing waste. Schuler said, “I hope the Committee will strongly consider taking steps to promote the use of geosynthetics in the Water Resources Development Act of 2008.” IFAI division Geosynthetic Materials Association presented Schuler with the “Friend of Geosynthetics” award in October 2007.
