Susanne Fyffe, PLA, ASLA, principal and founder of Fyffe Landscape Architecture (FLA) and a native Arlingtonian, has over 25 years of experience in landscape design. The team of two specializes in high-end residential design and finding innovative solutions to everyday lifestyles. Using natural resources and sustainable concepts, FLA has transformed subdivision configurations, entrance features, commercial streetscapes, horse farms, and roof gardens. At FLA, the client's needs and desires drive the design process, leading to seamless integration between the natural environment, architecture, and site characteristics. Primarily a referral-based firm, FLA has developed long-standing relationships with many tradesmen needed for most landscape design projects. They also enjoy working in collaboration with architects, engineers, and developers to create a design that is beautiful, buildable, and tailored to meet the needs, desires, and lifestyles of their clients.

Family Retreat, Alexandria, VirginiaA: This topographically challenged site, came into the hands of new owners envisioning a space better suited to their active, kid-oriented lifestyle. The goal was to expand the interior living space outdoors through a realigned entry drive, an outdoor dining area, a bar and grill, a fireplace, and transitions to recreational spaces. FLA was responsible for all conceptual design and master planning. To accommodate site drainage requirements, all rainwater was directed to an elegantly planted, dry stream swale at the bottom of the hill. New recreational spaces were created for bocee ball, badminton, soccer, and lacrosse. A secret woodland walk/bikeway enhances the edges. The front lawn and tree swing portrays natural beauty in an urban residential neighborhood and is engulfed with the ease of a circular driveway.
Single-Family Residence, Alexandria, VirginiaB: This single-family residence in Alexandria, Virginia is home to a large, busy family who spends a lot of time outside. The rear property line was angled, and FLA added a stepped fence line punctuated with trees and colorful plantings. The front porch covered area was sectioned off into a small courtyard to give the house more privacy. A low hedge row at the front entrance off the sidewalk is accented by two stone pillars to guide guests to the front door.
