The first European outpost for what today is Calgary, Alberta, Canada was Fort Brisebois, built in 1875 on this site by the North West Mounted Police. The fort was renamed Fort Calgary in 1876.

This is the view from Fort Calgary to downtown. During the 1990s a replica of the old fort and barracks were built. The 40-acre site, located in the city?EUR??,,????'???s east end, could become Calgary's Central Park.

The city of Calgary owns the historic land that was the site of the first European outpost, what is now known as Fort Calgary. The Fort Calgary Preservation Society operates the site, led by president and CEO Sara-Jane Gruetzner since 2000. Ms. Gruetzner is a landscape architect, a past-president of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) and soon to be a CSLA Fellow. A native of Newfoundland, she came to Calgary in 1992 to manage the city?EUR??,,????'???s urban park master plan.

Ms. Gruetzner and her board have a master plan to maintain the historical integrity of the site and further develop the fort as a key part of the downtown open space. They seek to raise awareness of the site?EUR??,,????'???s significance and even restore the landscape as it was in 1875.

The site was largely forgotten until the early 1970s when alderman John Ayer campaigned to raise awareness of the historic integrity of the land. The city purchased the acreage, demolished the dilapidated buildings and began building an interpretive center. Only two of the original 40 buildings remain standing, the 1906 Deane House and the Hunt House, the original Hudson?EUR??,,????'???s Bay post. The interior of the Deane House will be renovated, a parking lot relocated to open up space and a footbridge added over the Elbow River. A wetlands is also under development as is a railway interpretive exhibit.
