Easter is not only a time for decorating eggs, consuming chocolate and egg hunts; it is also a time for celebration and reflection. Because the holiday takes place in the early spring, flowers have played an important role in the holiday celebration. 1. Easter Lily - The Easter Lily is traditionally one of the most frequently used flowers for the holiday. The trumpet shaped white petals are simple, elegant and meaningful. They are also known as the "white lilies of hope" because legend says they were found where drops of Christ's sweat fell, and were found in the Garden of Gethsemane. They are also associated with the Virgin Mary, as tradition says her tomb was found empty, except for white lilies, three days after her death. They are commonly gifted on Easter and can be found adorning churches on Easter Sunday. This poem written by Louise Lewin Matthews in the early 1900's illustrates the prominence these lilies hold in the Easter celebration:
