Fort Lauderdale, Florida

FIU Student Academic Success Center, Miami, Florida
The siting and design for this project provides a welcoming series of spaces that respond to a variety of campus uses, while celebrating sustainability and a campus art initiative. The SASC siting was established by utilizing existing campus axial relationships and south Florida solar patterns to determine the structure's orientation for interior natural lighting, energy conservation and outdoor space design. Building upon established campus artistic initiatives, the design successfully integrated a sculpture garden that reflects FIU's Hispanic influence.

This section of Biscayne Boulevard includes the historic Freedom Tower, the American Airlines Arena, Herzog & de Meuron's Perez Art Museum Miami, Grimshaw's Frost Museum of Science, a Metrorail station and is the gateway to the Miami Arts District, anchored by Cesar Pelli's Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The streetscape design incorporated Roberto Burle Marx paving patterns to create a cohesive corridor for these diverse cultural and transportation facilities and over 3,000 recently completed high-rise residential units. This 'Signature Streetscape' defines Biscayne Boulevard as the spine that engages these cultural, residential, commercial, transportation and sports venues while creating a vibrant pedestrian space that is enjoyed daily by residents and facilitates large crowds during events.

Plantation Preserve, Plantation, Florida
Miller Legg successfully redeveloped a 212-acre abandoned parcel wrought with vagrancy and extreme environmental contamination into a diverse public open space. The Preserve provides a golf course and unique recreational, historical, archeological and communal amenities for the residents of the City of Plantation. The championship Audubon-Certified golf course is complemented by over 40 acres of restored native Florida habitats that create a lush landscape along a 1-mile shared use path that weaves through the Preserve.

Editor's Note: With the ASLA annual meeting and EXPO in Miami canceled this year due to safety concerns amid the COVID-19 health pandemic, LASN still wanted to highlight the landscape architectural work of firms from the southeast region. LASN asked the firms to send us a short biographical profile, plus photography from selected projects, with a brief description of the design work for each project. We let the firms speak for themselves in their profiles and in describing the projects, although some editing was required because of space restraints and not all photography and projects could be included. Thank you, firms of Florida and Alabama for participating!

As seen in LASN magazine, September 2020.
