Fertilizing Within the Boundaries
Know the Legal Limits

Regulations on the commercial use of fertilizers, mainly to reduce the harm they can cause to waterways, have been enacted in almost half of the states in the U.S.

Since 24 states have commercial fertilizer restriction laws in place, professionals should check with their states' regulation offices to determine their compliance requirements; this according to Ed Dugan, the director of the International Association of Hydroseeding Professionals.

"Most of these regulations require the use of best management practices to reduce the impacts of fertilizers on waterways, and public education regarding correct fertilizer use," he writes.

The kinds of regulations that Dugan pointed to as being typical include restricted use areas near waterways, weather related application restrictions designed to reduce fertilizer runoff from excessive rain, date restrictions to reduce fertilizer use on frozen ground, and zero phosphate rules, which eliminate the use of phosphorous with certain exemptions.

"It should be noted that in most instances of new lawn establishment, the fertilizer regulations are less restrictive," he adds.

Dugan also reminds that some states have mandatory certification programs, and he cautions that most states will levy substantial fines for improper fertilizer use.
