Donald Brinkerhoff, California Landscape Architect, 1930 - 2021

Brinkerhoff Was 90

The acclaimed landscape architect, Don Brinkerhoff, was 90 years-old when he died on July 16, 2021 at his Newport Beach, California home. Brinkerhoff transformed the once bland Las Vegas strip along Las Vegas Boulevard, updated and enhanced resorts that makes Sin City the well-known tourist spot it is today. "Don's contributions from The Mirage, Treasure Island, Bellagio, Wynn, Encore, and China were critical," Steve Wynn said in a statement. "It was Don who dreamt up the detail of the front of The Mirage and it was Don that introduced me to Mark Fuller with the idea of the fountain at the Bellagio." Brinkerhoff, along with his wife Barbara, founded Lifescapes International Inc. He was a graduate of Cal Poly Pomona in 1952 with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. After five years working for others and gaining experience, he received his Landscape Architecture license in 1958. Shortly thereafter Brinkerhoff took a two-and-a-half-year sabbatical to gain experience and see the world around for greater inspiration for his work. Don Brinkerhoff was awarded several awards including, 1997 Fellow, American Society of Landscape Architects (FASLA), 2001 California Building Industry Foundation (CBIF) Hall of Fame Recipient, 2015 Green Industry Hall of Fame, to name a few.
