Colorado Landscape Architectural Sunset Review
Licensure Law Expires in 2017

Colorado landscape architects are currently waiting to hear the recommendation from the Department of Regulatory Agencies on whether or not the state legislature should renew the landscape architecture licensure law.

The Colorado legislature established statewide landscape architectural licensure in 2007 after a 20-year hiatus. At that point, all 50 states had licensure laws. However, Colorado's law is set to expire on July 1, 2017.

Due to the expiration, a sunset review is required. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, or DORA, is currently conducting this review and will present a recommendation to the state legislature to either re-authorize the law, or let it expire. The report will be published in October.

ASLA Colorado is actively working with DORA in support of licensure, providing information to the sunset review process and submitting a formal letter on behalf of the profession. They have also gathered letters of support from professional groups in related industries (such as civil engineering), large firms, and public agencies. Regardless of the outcome, ASLA Colorado has a strategy to introduce a re-authorization bill in 2017.
