Somewhat lost amongst the battle that was going on over the GOP health care bill, which was just narrowly passed by the House, that same body advanced an overtime bill that would give employees in the private sector the same opportunity that those in the public sector have enjoyed for years – the ability to take time off in lieu of overtime pay.

The bill, which passed 229 to 197, would first allow employers to choose whether or not to offer the option. For the employees of companies that choose to allow it, they can then voluntarily select to accrue an hour and a half of paid leave for every hour of overtime they work. However employees can later choose to receive pay instead for any unused compensatory time.
