Chamblee Square Park

Newark, New Jersey
by Suburban Consulting Engineers

Suburban Consulting Engineers (SCE) was selected by the City of Newark to provide professional landscape architecture, civil engineering design, survey, conceptual design, bid phase, and construction oversight services for Chamblee Square Park Improvements.

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Chamblee Square Park is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

The City of Newark is the largest City in the State of New Jersey, and it was their project goal to create a recreational space for a neighborhood that previously lacked playgrounds within a 10-minute walk.

Community feedback emphasized the need for a vibrant park that fosters social connections and promotes health and wellness. Key features of the park include a grand entrance with signage, distinct play areas for different age groups, and engaging musical and sensory play elements. The design prioritizes inclusivity with equipment for children of diverse abilities, alongside dedicated fitness stations and a synthetic turf area for versatile play by users of all ages. Additional amenities such as a splash pad, basketball courts, walkways, benches, an octagonal pavilion for gatherings, and energy-efficient LED lighting ensure a welcoming and safe environment for the entire community.

To optimize the layout in the limited space, the Landscape Architects collaborated closely to ensure functionality and accessibility. New drainage systems and utilities needed to be designed and integrated from scratch, requiring thorough planning with consultants. Additionally, restricted working space impacted construction staging, but careful communication helped mitigate these issues. All new walkways were designed to be step-free and Americans with Disability Act of 1990 (ADA)-compliant, enhancing accessibility for the community. Through proactive management, the Project Team successfully created a welcoming recreational space.
