The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) announced July 7, 2014, that David Johnston, governor general of Canada, has agreed to establish the Governor General's Medal in Landscape Architecture (GGMLA) to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the CSLA.

GGMLA will be the highest honor bestowed by the CSLA, and awarded every two years. The medal is meant for exceptional landscape architects whose lifetime achievements and contributions to the profession have had a unique and lasting impact on Canadian society. The only other requirement is the landscape architect must be a member of CSLA. Current CSLA board members are ineligible, and a landscape architect may only receive the GGMLA once in his or her lifetime.
