Bostick Landscape Architects

Huntsville, Alabama

Bostick celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020. In 2010, the firm began designing a wide range of environments for a varying clientele from single family oasis, corporate headquarters and parks and nationally recognized sports facilities.

Philosophy: We believe that client participation in the creative process is essential to creating public and private spaces that foster use and stimulate the user. We listen to the needs of our clients and work hand-in-hand to attain their objectives to deliver spaces that invite and inspire. Our scope of work mainly focuses on learning landscapes from higher learning.

Constitution Hall Park
In preparation for the 200th anniversary of the state in 2019, the site where Alabama entered the Union was targeted for renovation. The grounds, limited behind fencing, had seen some small renovations of areas cobbled together over time but use and age had taken their toll.

BLA was responsible for the design and oversight of all exterior spaces including pedestrian circulation, steps, planters, a 4-square garden, grading plans, drainage, as well as the planting design.

The goal for this project was to clean up the grounds for the celebration of the 200th anniversary and also leaves a public park in the downtown area that can host community events and activities. A central lawn was established to unify all the buildings around a green. The north end of the green is anchored by a renovated pavilion and provides the formal entry to the park. Lutyens styled stairs connect the lawns sections and allows grade change while providing seating for demonstrations and events. New walking paths with brick pavers are found throughout the park ensuring ADA compliance along the lawn and providing access.

A plant palette was developed to emphasize Alabama plant material and is a modern interpretation of historic plants which would have been relocated from nature 200 years ago.

The project received an Honor award from the North Alabama AIA as well as winning the people's choice award in which the public selected their favorite architecture projects.

Legacy Apartments Phase II
A new phase of a multifamily development situated in Jones Valley and nestled at the foot of the mountain brought an opportunity to design a landscape to fit in a unique setting. A dog park area for both small and large dogs was designed into the site plan and the planting throughout the site utilize plant types from the phase I development to blend in seamlessly with the first phase and soften the fa????ade of the building, provide shade throughout the parking and engage residents on a day to day basis.

The showstopper is an elevated courtyard with a walking path and seating situated in lush plantings of perennials, shrubs, grasses and trees. A yoga lawn, passive areas to watch the sunset or unwind around one of the firepits, grilling areas with pergolas and a game lawn all surround the lagoon pool. The pool has a beach entry, waterfalls cascading from planters, bar seating, ledge seating and a segregated lap area for residents.

John Hunt Park Trail Sports
This project turned an underused golf course in the heart of the city into a world class athletic facility which is open to the public and is also a competition ready venue on the local, regional and national stage.

The cross country running course is the highlight of the park. The course has distances of 2 miles, 5k, 6k, 8k and 10k lengths. Weaving through the mature landscape gives runners the chance to challenge themselves while providing inspiring views of the natural setting and the city. Paramount to this track vs. others around the country is the ease of which spectators can move about allowing fans to see runners and then a few steps away be able to see the pack again on a different section of the course. This has become known as the fastest in the U.S. Last fall, the first female ran the fastest 3.1 mile XC in history in under 16 minutes. 32 boys ran the course in under 15 minutes as well previously only 10 had ever broken that mark. The course was selected to host the 2021 S.E. NCAA Div. 1 regionals and will host the Division II National championship in 2022.

A walking trail offers a 2.1-mile loop made from recycled tires, which are 70% permeable and 100% ADA accessible.

NICA, the governing body for student mountain biking, certified the course 'Blue' and the first race will be held spring 2022.
