New Landscape Expo, Anaheim Speaker Bob Scarfo:

Landscape Architect Bob Scarfo, BLA, MLA, & PhD. has recently been added to the seminar lineup at the Landscape Expo, Anaheim in November. Scarfo has several professional degrees in landscape architecture and a Ph.D. in Social Geography. He is also a Certified Aging in Place Specialist. Currently, he practices landscape architecture under the name, Land and Life, LLC in Spokane, Washington, where he was also an Emeritus professor at Washington State University before his retirement in 2013. Scarfo now works as a consultant in community building with Land and Life and speaks at various events.

With 35 years of experience in the industry, Scarfo published a book on landscape architecture titled "Landscape Architecture as Storytelling: learning design through analogy" which is set to come out in November of this year. Much like this book, Scarfo's Landscape Expo, Anaheim seminar on November 16th at 10 a.m. is on the same topic.

The landscape narrative design process is a storytelling process, and Scarfo explains that in his workshops, webinars, and seminars.

In the July 2013 issue of LASN, Scarfo guided landscape architecture students at the Washington State University, in his role as associate professor, in planning a self-sustaining community in the Hillyard neighborhood. In his role on this project, as a registered landscape architect in Washington and Massachusetts, Scarfo guides professionals and students on how to create a project that not only follows the requirements of the client but also tells a story.

Seminar Description:
Session participants are introduced to landscape design as storytelling and participate in a couple of simple exercises. Understanding how landscape features and spaces speak to people is based on a three-tiered analogy that interrelates language, basic design, and landscape design. We all read the landscapes we experience. The analogy helps us understand how that works and in doing so brings people, in terms of their expectations and experiences, to the beginning of your design process. The fact that people read their landscapes means that as designers we can "author" landscape narratives. That authoring process involves writing a short narrative, visually interpreting your narrative into a storyboard, and then transferring the storyboard into a final design. In this way, people come first. The science, technology, and related design and construction jargon come last with the development and implementation of your final design.

2. Use a designs end-users anticipated experiences to develop a design that speaks to people.
3. Experience a unique 3-step approach to landscape design: narrative writing, storyboarding, and final design.
