ASLA Recommends Actions for Biden Administration

Association Calls for Improvements in Climate and Infrastructure

Sustainable design is among the priorities outlined by ASLA in their recommendations to the new presidential administration.

As Biden's presidency begins, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) have outline policy recommendations for the administration. In a report titled "Landscape Architects Design Vibrant Resilient, and Just Communities for All - Recommendations for the Biden-Harris Administration," ASLA outlines four major areas for the president to focus on in respect to the Landscape Architecture profession. The four areas are: applying STEM-related design principles to protect communities, addressing climate change through sustainable, resilient design, support green community infrastructure solutions, and promoting racial, social, and environmental justice design.

ASLA CEO, Torrey Carter-Conneen, communicated the associations priorities and explained the industries abilities to combat issues related to those ideas. Carter-Conneen explained, that the climate is in crisis. Social and racial injustice issues continue to go unaddressed. The pandemic is forcing us to rethink public space. Landscape architects aren't just designing resilient, sustainable solutions for all these problems - they're designing the public policies necessary to support that vital work."

The report is said to contain specific, actionable policy recommendations that would allow Landscape Architects to participate in direct support of the goals outlined in the four areas of focus. In the press release, the ASLA said they are looking forward to working with the Biden administration to implement their recommendations that, according to them, will "lead to vibrant, resilient and just communities across the nation."
