ASLA Joins Architecture 2030 In Mission to Achieve Zero Emissions by 2040

The Most Aggressive Challenge by Environmental Professions

The American Society for Landscape Architects (ASLA) partnered with Architecture 2030 and the call for all soverign governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent by 2030 and zero emissions by 2040. This move would accelerate the current timeline to achieve emission reductions that are spelled out in the Paris Climate Accord by a decade.

As the most ambitious climate move ever issued by environmental professionals, Architecture 2030, the built environment is the world's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. They account for at least 40 percent but don't include the carbon that is already embodied within the structures and materials of buildings and landscapes.

"We have a responsibility to take whatever actions are necessary to more rapidly reduce greenhouse gases emitted by the built environment," said Torey Carter-Conneen, CEO of ASLA,"As the leading organization of landscape architects, we can play a significant role in encouraging the expansion of Climate Positive Design strategies and natural carbon sinks in our projects, as well as reducing the impacts of climate change, such as increasingly dangerous urban temperatures, on underserved communities."
