In front of a large gathering of the Master Gardeners Group of Dutchess County N.Y., Mark Sosnowitz, ASLA, MG, recently delivered his presentation "The History of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning," which traces the chronicle of how humans transformed the land with man-made installations.

 

From Stonehenge to the new landscape surrounding the World Trade Center Monument, Sosnowitz fills in the gaps of how landscape architecture evolved. As he relates, "The first person to write of making a landscape was Joseph Addison in 1712. The term landscape architecture was invented by Gilbert Laing Meason in 1828, and John Claudius Loudon (1783-1843) was instrumental in the adoption of the term landscape architecture by the modern profession."

Sosnowitz has devoted 45 years to the green industry with career highlights that include irrigation designs for the original Yankee Stadium during a renovation in the 70s, two gardens at the United Nations headquarters and the soccer field at West Point, renovations of 45 golf courses and developing the Arrowood Conference Center in Rye Brook, N.Y.
