AOLP 2017 Lighting Awards
A Sampling of 'Gold' and 'Silver' Awards in a Number of Categories

The Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) was established in 2001 as a trade association for contractors, manufacturers, lighting designers, landscape architects and distributors from all over the U.S. and Canada. The AOLP exists to promote and advance the landscape and architectural lighting industry for lighting designers and installers, distributors and business-to-business manufacturers.

Each year, ALOP presents 'Gold' and 'Silver' awards in lighting in a number of categories. The following presents some of those winning lightscapes.

2017 Gold Award - Outdoor Living Lighting Project

Project: Schulman Residence

The irregular shape of the outdoor bar and the desire to leave the rope light exposed rather than hidden under the bar top created a number of problems. Flat LED ribbon lights would not form an outer edge for the irregular bar shape, plus the designers did not want the LEDs in the rope light to be visible. The solution was 24-volt LED color-changing neon rope lights, which provide a continuous line of light. The wireless controls allow for any color desired. The project used 235 fixtures; 150 of those are mounted on extensions to properly light the 75+ year-old pines and thick espalier foliage.

2017 Gold Award - Holiday Lighting

Project: Brightwaters HLS

This residence in St. Petersburg, Fla., displayed the Christmas spirit by wrapping white LED mini bulbs around the trunks of the palm trees and on the palm fronds. Warm, white C9 LEDs run along the home's roofline, along with 4' strands of white bulbs in the wreath over the threshold, plus strings of 'candy cane' lighting wrapped around the architectural columns on either side of the entrance.

2017 Gold Award - Feature Focused Lighting Project

Project: Mind, Body and Soul (sculptures)

This project involved lighting three sculptures (Mind, Body and Soul) in the courtyard of a regional hospital. The wave-like outer sculptures (Mind and Body) "flow" toward the central sculpture (Soul), which "explodes" with colors. Seven-watt 15???(R)???AE? 5700K LED lamps were used to achieve the desired effects. The outer sculptures have three fixtures each; the Soul sculpture has four fixtures.

NiteLiters worked with the artist during the installation to remove some of the glass pieces from the sculptures and fashioning aluminum mounting plates for fixtures within the sculpture, using the same aluminum ties as the artist to attach hollow aluminum tubes matching the aluminum rods in the sculpture to conceal the cable.

The designer used 5 brass path lights, 13 brass directional fixtures and 1 copper down light to highlight the large potted plant at the entryway to the interior courtyard of a small residence.

Using a cross lighting pattern, the designer was able to fill the back planter with even levels of light, creating a beautiful mirror image on the pool surface. Placing the lighting between the tree line and front level succulents created both silhouetting and backlighting effects. The most prominent feature became the featured potted plant at the entryway.

The Barn – 2017 Silver

The BARN is the Bridge District's new indoor/outdoor culinary and venue on West Sacramento's riverfront. Its curving 80-foot long sculptural canopy is 20' tall.

Lighting the structure without creating glare for the residential condos was required. Location of the lights was a challenge because of underground utilities (storage tanks) and sidewalk setbacks. Four custom fabricated poles (20" to 30" tall) were built to provide the perfect projection angles to illuminate the surface of the BARN. Each pole holds 5 RGBW LED fixtures, and each fixture has a specific lens according to the shape of light needed. All fixtures have an extended glare shield (a 45???(R)???AE? cut off). The bases of the poles have remote power supplies that connect via CAT6 data cables to the utility room. The ethernet-based light lets the operator control the lights on site or remotely. The lights turn on at dusk and off at dawn with white light, but dynamic colored effects can be produced when desired.

The landscape and palms are all illuminated with Kichler bullet and path lights with halogen lamps, powered by a 900W SS transformer. The pergola is down lit with the same bullet lights. The fireplace is illuminated with 6" Kichler LED bar lights. Paver lights allow the homeowners to safely step down to the recessed kitchen/pool bar, which is also illuminated with LED bar lights.

Water Color – 2017 Silver

This fire table sits over a pool's shallow end. The designer cut and powder coated extruded aluminum channels to match the stone coping and installed a RGB+WW LED light ribbon in the channels under the stone coping. A remote control adjusts the speeds of the color changing, or can freeze on any color.
