Angular forms rise from the landscape. Brilliant colors stretch across the surfacing. Towering shade structures create sweeping silhouettes overhead, all while children climb through rocket-inspired playground towers and spin across an environment that sparks curiosity at every turn. For Landscape Architects and park planners, however, the project represents much more than an eye-catching destination. It demonstrates how a strong design narrative can unify playground equipment, shade, surfacing, and site amenities into a cohesive experience that supports community identity, encourages inclusive play, and creates lasting value for residents.

A Civic Imprint
As municipalities increasingly invest in destination parks, communities are looking for signature spaces that become landmarks, encourage repeat visitation, and reflect local character. Benefitting from landscape design by international landscape architecture firm SWA Group and playground design by Landscape Structures, every major design decision reinforces the central theme, resulting in an immersive environment where architecture, play, and landscape work together to create a unified experience.

 

A Clear Focus
The coordinated expression is demonstrated from top to bottom. Custom SkyWays® shade structures soar across the site with dramatic geometric forms that evoke futuristic architecture while providing welcome protection from the Southern California sun. More than a functional amenity, the structures establish a distinctive visual identity for the playground and demonstrate how shade can become an integral part of the overall design language. Beneath the sweeping canopies, twin rocket-inspired PlayBooster® towers - provided by local equipment supplier RecWest Outdoor Products, as was the rest of the play elements - serve as the focal point of the playground. Their custom forms invite climbing, exploration, and imaginative role play while reinforcing the project's overarching narrative. Rather than existing as standalone equipment, the structures contribute to a carefully orchestrated environment where every element supports the same story. Nearby, younger children discover their own adventure within a Hedra® Scout play structure. Its geometric forms complement the larger aesthetic while offering developmentally appropriate climbing experiences for preschool-aged visitors. Angular Hedra® swing frames continue the futuristic vocabulary throughout the site, proving that even familiar playground components can reinforce a cohesive vision.

Supplementing the Cosmic Design
Movement is intentionally woven throughout the experience. A Global Motion® spinner creates opportunities for dynamic play, while multiple swing options encourage children, caregivers and family members to enjoy the park together. The variety of activities accommodates different ages, abilities, and comfort levels, supporting an environment where everyone can participate. The poured-in-place safety surfacing plays an equally important role in the project's success. Vibrant color transitions and sculpted topography do more than provide fall protection. They become part of the play experience itself, inviting children to climb, balance and imagine they are traversing the terrain of another planet while visually connecting the entire site. Freestanding sensory play components further enrich the environment by extending opportunities for discovery beyond the primary structures. Together with the sculptural surfacing and themed equipment, they encourage exploration from multiple perspectives and support a variety of play styles. The result illustrates the power of thematic consistency. Every major component, from shade structures to surfacing to playground equipment, contributes to a unified design vision without compromising functionality, accessibility, or user comfort.
