2016 GOMACO University Opens This Month
Instruction in Use of GOMACO Equipment

GOMACO University is all about teaching students how to operate, maintain, repair and troubleshoot its many machines and products, all of it geared to the concrete construction industry. GOMACO University will take place at the company's headquarters in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Every year, GOMACO Corp. "?u a manufacturer of curb and gutter machines, slipform pavers and other concrete construction equipment "?u teaches students how to use some of its products in a classroom setting.

The 2016 GOMACO University, in Ida Grove, Iowa, begins in January and continues through April.

Classes are scheduled on specific models of GOMACO equipment, and instructors will cover everything from machine setup, control systems, troubleshooting, and more in both lectures and hands-on shop time.

GOMACO will also hold specialized mini-courses on all three major 3D guidance systems:

Leica Geosystems PaveSmart 3D software, includes software setup, maintenance, and operation along with use on placer/spreaders and curb and gutter. The Leica handheld rover with VIVA software will be covered. Basic grade checking, stakeout, volumes and areas, data import and export will be addressed. Diagnostics will conclude the course.

Trimble PCS900 3D software for concrete slipform paving. Includes machine setup and operation and use of Trimble's data collection software. Diagnostics will conclude the course.

Topcon's mmGPS solution for concrete curb and gutter paving. Includes machine operation as well as data collection and grade verification. Diagnostics will conclude the course.

Paul Okamoto is returning to GOMACO University to teach a concrete mix design class, starting with the basics and leading into more advanced topics. His lectures will cover mix materials, the mix design process, optimization of mixes, compatibility, edge slump, setting time problems, troubleshooting and how mix design can affect rideability.

GOMACO also manufactures placer/spreaders, trimmer/placers, cylinder finishers, canal machinery and accessories for all types of concrete work.

"GOMACO University is once again offering classes on controls diagnostics," its website states. "There will be a class covering maintenance and diagnostics on G21 and G22 controls for curb and gutter machines, and a class covering maintenance and diagnostics on G21 and G22 controls on the pavers. There will also be a course covering the maintenance and diagnostics of GOMACO's G+ control system for both the curb and gutter and paving equipment.

Students who attend either the four-track Commander III or two-track and four-track pavers class from March 1-4, or the two-track and four-track pavers or IDBI class from March 19 through April 1, can also go to an abbreviated version of the concrete mix design class. These sessions start at 1 p.m. on Feb. 29 and March 28, and are included in the class fee for that week.

Concrete Contractors Opens Mentoring Program
The American Society of Concrete Contractors and its Emerging Leaders Committee have started a mentoring program under a joint sponsorship.

All ASCC contractor and associate members may take part in this program at no cost. The ASCC is based in St. Louis, Mo.

"The program seeks to unite seasoned concrete construction professionals with members of lesser experience in a guided program to share knowledge and expertise," said Greg Hyde, Hyde Concrete, and an EL Committee member.

Mentors are selected for their proficiency in a variety of disciplines, including tilt-up, super-flat floors, decorative concrete, industrial construction, business management and field operations.

Mentees can be any member looking to augment their general concrete construction knowledge or become proficient in a particular specialty.
