Rock Mill Park, Alpharetta, Georgia

Rock Mill Park is a passive recreational site that also serves as an educational exhibit for the city of Alpharetta. This unique park is multiuse in nature, serving the public as well as operating as a maintenance center for Recreation and Parks Department personnel. It is located within the 100-year floodplain of Big Creek and offered numerous design challenges. Breedlove incorporated stormwater treatment facilities, including bioretention cells, enhanced swales and wetlands into the design. Dispersed throughout the park are informational signs educating the park's users about the various stormwater treatment facilities there, as well as the area's native wildlife, habitats and Cherokee history.

Eretus Rivers Elementary School, Atlanta

Eretus Rivers Elementary School has been a cornerstone of the affluent Buckhead community of Atlanta for generations. The campus was reconstructed to replace a hodgepodge of buildings and a convoluted circulation system. At the same time, it was upgraded to reflect a 21st century approach to ecological sustainability. The design plan called for the preservation of some massive water oaks, including one in the center of the new campus courtyard. This signature courtyard preserves this massive tree, incorporates statues and other elements from the previous campus, and employs a bioretention system for an efficient stormwater management system. Other bioretention elements are rain gardens and porous pavements.

Walk of Heroes Veterans Memorial, Rockdale County, Georgia

This project began in 1996 as an in-house design competition. Once the winning concept was selected, the project was taken from conceptual design to master planning, then to multiple construction documentation phases. The basic approach was to connect the natural environment the site offers to the desired program elements. The memorial combines architectural and landscape elements into a pedestrian park on the northwest bank of Black Shoals Lake. It consists of approximately 25,000 square feet of accessible walkways and plazas for the handicapped and disabled, over 600 linear feet of seat walls and retaining walls, a parking lot, sculptures, water features, lighting fixtures and site furnishings.

Breedlove Land Planning, Inc., has been a multidisciplinary firm of landscape architects and civil engineers for over 30 years, serving clients with projects of any size and scope. While its 19 professionals are experienced in many ways, the company focuses on three primary sectors: education, parks and athletics. On staff are five principals, eight registered landscape architects and four professional engineers. Breedlove Land Planning's holistic design professionals are as comfortable designing a seat wall as they are a six-phase erosion, sedimentation and pollution control plan for a 50-acre site.
