Yosemite Park "Voluntour" Upcoming

Nature Corps., a nonprofit conservation organization, is requesting volunteers to help restore meadows in Yosemite National Park as part of the National Park Service's Merced River Restoration Plan.

The meadows, located in Yosemite Valley, are part of the estimated 10,000 meadows in the Sierra Nevada that have been affected by invasive nonnative species, foot traffic, road building, development and catastrophic wildfires. Volunteers will be tasked, on September 6-8, with extracting conifers and nonnative species, and collecting seeds to propagate native flora for future meadow restoration plantings.

"Healthy meadows are vital for wildlife populations," says Mark Landon, Nature Corps' executive director. His organization cites that around two-thirds of California's birds and amphibians depend upon meadows for their survival and that during summer months, meadows are the single most important habitat for them as well as large and small mammals.

Volunteers will also "enjoy delicious cuisine prepared by trained chefs," and be able to partake in a variety of organized nature and photo walks.
