WTC Site Update! LMDC Selects Six New Teams MANHATTAN, NY--The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) is responding to negative public reaction over six initial designs released in July (LASN, September 2002) by selecting six new teams to join consultants Beyer Blinder Belle, among others, in reshaping plans for the former World Trade Center site. Working with a grant award of $40,000 apiece, each team--consisting of Studio Daniel Libeskind of Berlin; Foster and Partners of London; New York-based Richard Meier, Peter Eisenman, Charles Gwathmey and Steven Holl; United Architects, a collaborative of international firms; Skidmore Owings & Merrill of New York; and another international collaborative, THINK--will develop plan proposals around design features that were widely embraced by the public in the first stage of planning, such as a "powerful skyline element" and a West Street Promenade. At least three proposals will be presented to the public by the end of this year, with a final land use plan set to be released in spring 2003.
